Born in 1968, Mr. Chatterjee is an Honors Graduate in Commerce from Calcutta University and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
He joined Tata Sons in 1995. During his stint in the Company, he worked in the areas of Corporate Finance and Planning. During the years 1996-98, he was also a visiting faculty at XLRI, Jamshedpur in Corporate Finance. In 1998 Mr. Chatterjee was transferred to the Tata Steel Head Office in Mumbai and subsequently to Tata Sons Limited in the Group Executive Office (GEO). He became General Manager – Corporate Finance in Tata Sons in 2002. During his tenure in Tata Sons Limited, he was involved in Mergers & Acquisitions’ activities including privatizations and joint ventures. He was also the lead facilitator in the Group wide roll out of Economic Value Added (EVA) for the major Tata Companies.
Mr. Chatterjee re-joined Tata Steel on August 1, 2003 and was appointed as the Vice President (Finance) w.e.f. August 1, 2004.
During his tenure, Mr. Chatterjee has led the first overseas acquisition of the Company –NatSteel Asia which has 2 mtpa finishing facilities in 7 countries in South East Asia. He subsequently led the acquisition of a 1.7 mtpa Millennium Steel (now Tata Steel Thailand) in Thailand.
In 2006-07, he played a critical role in the acquisition of Corus Group plc for USD 13.7 billion including in the deal structuring, valuation, developing a business plan, tax maximization, due diligence and the takeover process. During the same time, he led the Country’s largest capital raising process including USD 13.75 billion for the Corus acquisition including USD 7 billion from the bank market, USD 2.2 billion in Equity and Convertible Preference Shares and USD 875 million from a uniquely structured Convertible Bonds
With the announcement of the new Tata Steel Group post the acquisition of Corus, Mr. Chatterjee was appointed as Group Chief Financial Officer w.e.f. 1st January 2008. He has overall responsibility for Group Financial Reporting, Investor Relations, Financing Strategy including debt and equity raising, Corporate M&A, Risk Management and Compliance, Taxation Strategy and planning and co-ordination of statutory and management reporting. Mr Chatterjee has been appointed as Whole Time Director on the Board of Tata Steel Limited effective November 9, 2012. His current designation is Executive Director & Group Chief Financial Officer, Tata Steel.
He is on the Board of several Tata Steel Group companies including Tata Steel Europe, NatSteel Holdings Pte. Limited, Tata Steel (Thailand) Public Company Limited, and others. He is Chairman on the Boards of Tata Metaliks Limited and the Tinplate Company of India Limited
Mr. Chatterjee was nominated as one of India’s best CFOs by Business Today Magazine in 2005 and 2006 and was the CFO of the year for 2 categories in 2007 CNBC CFO Awards. He was declared India’s “Best Executive” for 2009 by Asia Money Magazine. In March 2012, he has been awarded the Best Performing CFO in the Metals Sector by CNBC TV18. More recently, he has been awarded the Best CFO of India Award for excellence in Corporate Governance. He is also a frequent speaker in various conferences in India and abroad including the McKinsey Global CFO Forum 2008, Economist Conferences, London Business School and CII organized conferences. He is a member of the Primary Market Advisory Committee on Capital Markets of SEBI and was a member of the Takeover Regulations Advisory Committee of SEBI, which drafted the new Takeover Code for India. He has recently been appointed as the first Indian on the Global Preparers Forum which is advisory body of the International Accounting Standards Board, London.
